Increasing and maintaining adequate muscle mass is one of the best ways to keep body fat low and to improve overall fitness, particularly as you age.
Resistance exercise such as lifting weights is the best way to build muscle mass. Still, the number of women who actually participate in any formal or consistent weight training workout is extremely low.
1. You will burn more calories!
It takes more energy for your body to maintain muscle cells than it does fat cells, so by lifting weights to add more muscle mass, you will boost your metabolism.
2. You will maintain your muscle
Between the ages of 30 and 70 women lose an average of 22 percent of their total muscle. This mass is replaced with fat if you are not actively working to retain muscle mass.
3. You will build stronger bones
When you lift weights, you engage muscles that pull on the tendons which, in turn, pull on the bones. This added stress makes bones stronger!
